THE BIG SUMMER ADVENTURE – Day 13 – 25 May 2019 – On to Agay……

Yes, across the Viaduc de MIllau we go …… cheeky video.

So back on the A75 Autoroute going south towards Montpellier, NE up past Nimes, then SW down to go round Arles, then past Aix-en Provence onto the La Provencale  motorway toward Frejus and St Raphael. Yes I know, more boring motorway, but in this case there wasn’t much option, as nearly 400km had to be done.

It was quite amazing to me how the whole climate seemed to change (almost like a switch being switched) once down on the costal plain and out of the Massif Central. Suddenly it was Mediterranean with completely different light and temperature – hot and dry.  The vegetation changes as well – suddenly palm trees ! And a different attitude to motorists in the service areas. You know you’re getting into the South when there are shelters for the cars………

My target for the evening was a campsite in the small quiet costal village of Agay, close to St Rapael/Frejus – definitely in the south of France on the Cote d’Azur ! Agay is an old haunt from my early childhood, the campsite being called La Vallee du Paradis adjacent to the Agay River.

This was the start of the “holiday” part of my trip, as I planned to send 5 nights there, with either days trips out or just resting days. Some washing also had to be done, no pants and socks left. Well, it was, unbelievably, day 13 already…..

It turned out that the French idea of camping has changed a bit since my last trip to the south, as I ended up being the only tent. The majority of places were occupied by various sizes of semi-permanent trailer homes, complete with all built-in amenities, I guess. Lusted Sud de France was established toute suite.

Although it wasn’t quite the “paradise” as suggested on the website (never is, is it ?), it was a good base for exploration. the staff were very helpful and seemed to appreciate my continuing dismal efforts to speak French wherever possible. Just to make things more fun, they tried to always answer me in English !

As the season was only just starting, the campsite wasn’t all that busy overall, which was nice in a way.

So a long and boring hot travel day over with – off to bed……
