A planned rest day (sort of), but with a trip to look around Cucuron itself later in the afternoon, perhaps drink a beer or two……
First, though, let me tell you about this lunatic Dutch guy….
One of the solo itinerant over-nighters, I got talking to him last night, before he packed up and went off today. He has all the right kit on his bike, including a tent, sleeping bag, fold up chair, small stove, bottle opener and wine glass – all the essentials.
He’d ridden 90 km the before landing up at Cucuron. Apparently spent 20 hours on a bus from Holland to Avignon with his bike and kit – all 80 kg of it, then into the Luberon. Cycling-wise, the Luberon is NOT flat, although there seem to be plenty of cycling tours available. Planned to do 40 km today “going somewhere, don’t know yet”. His catch phrase was ALWAYS TOMORROW ! I am truly humbled !
I never found out his name…….
Cucuron is another of the places used for the film A GOOD YEAR. The two main characters (played by Russell Crowe as Max Skinner and Marion Cotillard as his love interest Fanny Chenal) have their first dinner date there, by the pond/pool/ reservoir thingie. See below.
My beer was supplied by the Cafe de L’Etang, while I just watched the world go by. Very pleasant in the late afternoon sun. One couple were busy shuffling serious looking paperwork around on their table, which ended up with a professional handshake. Must’ve been business. Pretty pleasant office……..
The older part of Cucuron (ie most of it) is very pretty, as the enclosed shows. I had quite a walk round, post aperitif, but pre prandial.
Starting to run out of time, so Arles and the Pont Du Gard tomorrow
