Now on to the “meat” of the trip – well part of it perhaps. Into the Karpaz !!! This is the protected peninsular part that forms the “panhandle” of the Cyprus island shape. Not much population up here, lots of open space. It’s a bit wild in places, but some glorious beaches and views.
First of all had to get the car from Oscar’s Rent-a-car. I’ve hired from them before, without too many issues. This took a bit of time… in the tradition of North Cyprus of not hurrying too much – “every day a holiday !!”. Had to wait while it was being serviced, but did get a cup of coffee. My trusty steed below. Some of the off-road stuff is a bit rough, so I opted for something with a bit more ground clearance.
The plan ( ??????) was to drive up the north coast road and stay at the Club Malibu Beach Hotel . Not exactly the Ritz, but perfectly OK for a night or two.. H & H and their friends go there frequently, so that’s a good endorsement. It’s the setting that’s the killer – beautiful bay and beach. At this time of the year it’s also almost completely empty, so you get looked after.
As is my “usual procedure”, I left the new road as soon as possible, venturing on to the now neglected “old” coastal route. Bit rough in places, but fantastic views. I know which I prefer……..

Mind you, some of the road actually disappears in places – see the last photo above – just enough room for one car.
So a bit more of a dawdle along the coast. Along the way I stopped at the Matyat Restaurant for a coffee and more scenic gazing. It seemed to be part of a new resort development called Ardic Agaci. Looked nice but a bit new and definitely out of the way – great !
Eventually it’s the Malibu, an air conditioned room, a shower, food and drink and the reward of yet another great sunset.
