So, last night it rained – the theme continues….. Unfortunately, my normal go-to-bed routine had failed a bit and I had water inside the tent. Tut, tut !
Dry and sunny today – not often been able to write that !
First of all was a bit of a walk north further up the peninsular, towards a lighthouse. Didn’t quite make that, but did see some wonderful places to live. How about here at the end of the world? Proper “Good Life” stuff with chickens and home grown veg. Wonderful ! Might be a bit different in the winter though………
This is Gairloch village itself and the beautiful bay – yes, I know, another one….
I’d booked in at the Russian Arctic Convoy Museum (RACM) at Aultbea for the early afternoon. Booking necessary in these strange times, although when I got there the museum was not busy at all. At the time, the Scotland government needed to know where everybody had been, for their “Track and Trace” system.
Unfortunately, there was a delay on the journey. There’d been a head-on smash between a motorbike and a car on a bad bend at Poolewe, resulting in several ambulances, doctors, etc. I gather that there were no fatalities, but the local air ambulance was in attendance, to ferry the injured to Inverness. That meant the road being closed for at least half an hour wait – not many detour/alternative roads possible in this part of the Highlands……
Eventually we got going. Going past the scene, there was a Skoda estate wrapped round a telegraph pole and what remained of a bike that will be destined to go nowhere else except the scrap heap. Stay safe !
The Museum isn’t huge (about 2 bedroom house sized) but has a lot of local content. I was not aware that the military installations around Loch Ewe were manned by several thousand personnel, including Indian, Welsh and Polish soldiers, The WRNS was there, as well as a big NAFFI and cinemas. Quite a community.
Well worth a visit IMHO, if this sort of thing is your interest. They even had one of the NAFFI mobile canteens on display in an adjacent garage outside.
